Elect More Women

OCTOBER 1, 2020

"Women belong in all places where decisions are being made." - Ruth Bader Ginsburg

The debate made it painfully clear to me more than ever before, we need to elect more women.

From now through October 3, Bird will match all sales in-store and online with equal donations to EMILY's List.

Women candidates and voters are the key to Democrats winning in November. For 35 years, EMILY's List has led the way, recruiting, training and supporting women candidates, and persuading, mobilizing and turning out women voters. This year is no exception! Since its founding in 1985, they have helped elect 150 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,100 women to state and local office. Nearly 40% of the candidates EMILY's List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. In the historic 2017-2018 cycle, EMILY's List helped elect 34 new women to the House, including 24 red-to-blue victories, enough seats to have delivered the U.S. House majority alone. And since Donald Trump was elected in 2016, more than 55,000 women have reached out to EMILY's List about running for office, laying the groundwork for the next generation of candidates.

As my friend Sarah recently put it: No one can save us, but us. It is up to us to create the political reality we want to see in this country. In all my years of political activism, supporting and working with EMILY's List candidates and initiatives has been the easiest and most effective way to create real, positive, tangible change. We have one month until the most critical election of our lifetime, of our nation's lifetime. Luckily many of the women candidates endorsed by EMILY's List are running great races and have plenty of money and support to see the race through to victory in November. However, there are two candidates in particular that really need our help right now to FLIP THE SENATE. Barbara Boiler, U.S. Senate, Kansas, and Theresa Greenfield, U.S. Senate, Iowa. I also personally love and have supported MJ Heger, U.S. Senate, Texas, Lauren Underwood, U.S. House, Illinois, Gina Ortiz Jones, U.S. House, Texas, Xochitle Torres Small, U.S. House, New Mexico, Candace Valenzuela, U.S. House, Texas, Haley Stevens, U.S. House, Michigan, Mikie Sherrill, U.S. House, New Jersey, Lucy McBath, U.S. House, Georgia, Kendra Horn, U.S. House Oklahoma, Jahana Hayes, U.S. House, Connecticut, Wendy Davis, U.S. House, Texas, Sara Gideon, U.S. Senate, Maine.

Please check out the whole list and consider donating directly to these candidates:

If you can't donate directly or shop at this time, please consider EMILY's List "Help from Home" program which connects you directly to voters across the country. It mostly involves phone banking, but will also incorporate some text banking and voter education. There is virtual training beforehand so you can hit the ground running during your volunteer shift. Also a rad group of super fun, smart and badass friends I know have founded a new grassroots activism group called
Demo Crew 2020. They partner with campaigns in battleground states and with the Democratic Party to text bank to GOTV to flip the Senate and elect Biden and Harris.

If you are feeling sick right now, activism is the answer.
